FLORIDA FAMILY HOME

A BEACH HOUSE IN BLACK AND WHITE

A limited palette with unlimited possibilities; this core idea was the genesis behind this striking, art-laden family residence on Florida’s southern coast. The working relationship behind this second home began with the client’s farmhouse in rural Virginia. Coming from a long line of developers, with a family history of collaborating with well-known designers, this client had a keen eye and a refined vocabulary that informed his taste for striking, dramatic spaces rendered in black and white.

In the heart of the home, the living room exhibits an edgy, visually enticing dialogue of textures. At the center of the room, the onyx resin-topped dining table mirrors the soft, sloping forms of the ceramic light fixture. Its highly reflective bowing legs refract the organic texture of the cowhide carpet, the glint of brass, and the slender lines of the chairs to create a prismatic trompe l'oeil effect.

“Every time I step in the Florida house I am wowed by the beauty you have created.”

In other rooms, the bold contrast of this color scheme is harnessed to convey a sense of vivaciousness and childlike whimsy. Graphic lines are repeated throughout the room in an array of youthful patterns, plastered across the upholstery, the floor covering, and the walls of the space. The custom cubic stacking lounge sofa encourages creative alternative arrangements, transforming each aspect of the room into an avenue for play.

Many rooms, including the family room, were designed as a venue for the family’s spectacular collection of artworks. Each element interacts to create an exquisite atmosphere of airy, silver light, evoked by merging velvety textures and mirrored surfaces. Custom hand-painted window treatments, pendant lighting from a Ukrainian artist, and a rug from Hong Kongborn designer Andre Fu bring global artisanal influences into the home.
